Pall Mall brand cigarettes were introduced in 1899 by Butler & Butler Company, trying to take care of the upper class with the first cigarette "premium". It takes its name from the Pall Mall, a street known in London. In 1907, Pall Mall was acquired by American Tobacco with the sale of Butler & Butler. The new owners used the prize to test innovations in cigarette design, such as the "king" (now the standard size of 85 mm for cigarettes), and a new way of stuffing tobacco cigarettes, presumably because the throat easier.
